Pokémon GO S2 Cell Map — Level 14 & 17 Cells

Use this free S2 cell map to check where a PokéStop may appear and when an area may gain another Gym. Search an address, choose L17 for PokéStop placement or L14 for the community-reported gym thresholds, then manually add existing and planned wayspots. The map draws the S2 grid — it does not load live game or Wayfarer data — and your pins stay on this device.

What are S2 cells?

S2 is the grid Pokémon GO uses under the hood. It divides the world into square “cells,” and each cell can be split into four smaller ones again and again — so a higher S2 level means a smaller cell. Two levels do most of the work in Pokémon GO: level 14 cells (about 2 km across) decide how many Gyms an area gets, and level 17 cells (about 90 m) decide whether a single wayspot becomes a PokéStop or Gym at all. This page draws those cells on a real map so you can see them.

What this map does — and does not do

Why your approved stop never showed up

You nominated a wayspot, it got accepted, and… nothing appeared in the game. One common reason is the S2 level-17 rule: normally, at most one PokéStop or Gym exists per level-17 cell (about 90 m across). If your accepted wayspot shares its L17 cell with an existing stop or gym, it can stay in the Wayfarer/Lightship database without appearing in Pokémon GO. It is not lost, and it usually is not a bug — it just is not the one shown for that cell. (Legacy, sponsored, or other exceptional locations do not always follow the usual pattern.)

Switch the map to the Stops & Gyms (L17) preset and tap where your nomination is. If another stop or gym already sits inside the same highlighted cell, that is the likely explanation. Important: this is for understanding placement only — never move a nomination pin away from the real object just to land it in an empty cell. Nominations must reflect the accurate real-world location.

How gym cells work

Gyms are handed out per S2 level-14 cell — roughly 2 km across. The game counts the active wayspots inside each L14 cell and converts some of them into gyms on a community-reported schedule. A single wayspot in a cell is only a PokéStop; you need at least 2 before the first gym appears, and denser cells earn more gyms:

To use it: switch the map to Drop wayspots, tap each existing and planned wayspot, and every L14 cell lights up with the number of gyms it would support. The counter tells you how many more wayspots a cell needs to earn its next gym — a fast way to plan a nomination push for a park or campus. Always place candidates at their true real-world location, not to fill a cell.

EX-raid park cells (L20)

S2 level-20 cells are tiny — about 10 metres across — and community references tie them to EX-raid eligibility for gyms that sit on a park boundary. That is the honest scope of L20: a fine-grained check used to decide whether a boundary gym qualifies as an EX-raid location. It is not a duplicate-rejection or proximity rule. Wayfarer rejects duplicates for being the “same real-world location,” and the Wayfarer Help Center is explicit that proximity or wayspot density is not a review criterion. The proximity that actually affects Pokémon GO is the L17 stop/gym rule above.

S2 cells in Ingress

Pokémon GO and Ingress have always shared the same wayspot database through Wayfarer, so a spot nominated in one game can feed the other. But the two maps have diverged. Since around May 2025, Pokémon GO map changes no longer sync back to Ingress, so edits on the Pokémon GO side stop showing up in Ingress tools over time. Each game also applies its own inclusion rules: Pokémon GO uses the L17 “one per cell” filter, while Ingress portal density works out to roughly one portal per L19 cell (about 15 m). Wayfarer itself is still active and developed under Scopely, and the acquisition did not change the underlying S2-cell mechanics.

A note on where these numbers come from

Niantic and Scopely have never officially published the S2-cell mechanics. Every rule on this page — the L17 one-per-cell filter, the L14 gym thresholds, the L10 weather regions — is community reverse-engineered and cross-checked against Pokémon GO community references and the Niantic Wayfarer forums. The right confidence ceiling is “strong community consensus,” not “official spec,” and game mechanics can change without notice. This map is a fan-made planning aid, not an official Niantic or Scopely product, and it uses no Pokémon or Niantic imagery.

Why is my PokéStop not showing up in Pokémon GO?
A common reason is the S2 level 17 rule. A wayspot normally becomes a PokéStop or Gym only if it is the only one in its ~90 m level-17 cell.
